Wonder Works is cancelled for the summer of 2016

Unfortunately, due to last minute staffing constraints we have had to cancel Wonder Works for the summer of 2016. We are really disappointed, as we’re sure many of you are as well, and we apologize for the change.

Hopefully we’ll be able to run next year! We encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering next summer to get in touch with us – it really is the volunteers who make this happen.

Thankfully there are many wonderful and affordable programs for kids in the Palouse region. If you need help finding one, give us a shout.

We wish you all a fun and safe summer!

Sensitive Santa

December 10, 2016, 2:00pm - December 10, 2016, 7:00pm

What is a Sensitive Santa? Secular Families on the Palouse is happy to offer a place where families or individuals who have special needs or sensory issues can visit with Santa in an atmosphere free from the hustle and bustle of the holiday crowds – quieter and more sensory-friendly. You won’t find any line-ups, loud noise, or harsh lighting – snuggle up close to Santa, or sit nearby – whatever feels most comfortable. Refreshments and a light snack will be provided. A photographer will be on-site to take pictures which will be available for free download following the event, but you are welcome to snap a few photographs as well! If you need particular accommodations, or have any questions, please send a Facebook message or contact us via our website. We're offering timeslots for those who especially need to avoid any crowds or waiting time. We hope you’ll join us for this fun afternoon! This event is made possible by Humanists of the Palouse with help from Families Together. Photography generously provided by Lou and Marks. Feel free to download and share our flyer: bit.ly/sensitive-santa

Darwin on the Palouse 2016

February 6, 2016, 6:30pm - February 6, 2016, 11:30pm

Darwin on the Palouse, a free event to celebrate humanity, science and rational thought, is held annually this year in Pullman Washington. Dr.Richard Carrier will be presenting on Ancient Roman Creationism: Scientific Pagans vs. Armchair Christians. Dr. Carrier will discuss the ancient debate between creationists and natural selectionists, how ancient "intelligent design" advocates were far more scientific than their counterparts today, and what this means for the actual origins of real science. In the process he will survey the achievements and methods of ancient science and how it laid the foundation for modern science, and then examine the rhetoric against it by early Christians and how it hasn't changed in near 2,000 years. Glenn Branch wil be presenting on After Kitzmiller, What's Next for Creationism? Kitzmiller v. Dover, the 2005 case establishing the unconstitutionality of teaching intelligent design creationism in the public schools, was a pivotal event in the history of the creationism/evolution controversy in the United States. Branch will discuss why Kitzmiller was the effective end of the second phase of anti-evolution strategy and what the third phase is going to be like.
